Plant Story

Echinacea angustifolia, also known as narrow-leaved purple coneflower or blacksamson echina- cea, is a perennial herb native to North America. It is widely distributed in central Canada and central United States. This was one of the most widely used medicinal plants by Native Americans for a variety of ailments. It was used as a painkiller for toothaches, coughs, colds, sore throats, and snake bites. It was also used as a wash for burns to relieve pain.

E. angustifolia herb contains caffeic acid derivatives, such as cichoric acid, echinacoside, verbas- coside, chlorogenic acid, and isochlorogenic acid. It also contains flavonoids of quercetin and kaempferol in free and glycoside forms, including rutoside, luteolin, kaempferol, quercetin, apigen- in, and isorhamnetin. The anti-oxidant activities of E. angustifolia leaves were shown by DPPH and ABTS assays. It was demonstrated that echinacoside, one of the main constituents, protects skin damage induced by UVB via inhibition of oxidative stress.
