Plant Story
Lippia citriodora (also known as Aloysia citrodora) is a perennial, flowering plant native to South America. It is commonly called lemon verbena or lemon beebrush. The leaves of lemon verbena have been used to add lemon flavor to foods and beverages. The leaves can also be used in potpourri and in herbal tea for its flavor and relaxing effect. Additionally, leaf infusion has been used to treat asthma, cold, fever, flatulence, colic, diarrhea, and indigestion.
Various compounds have been identified in lemon verbena. Verbenalin (iridoid glucoside), phenolic compounds such as luteolin 7-O-diglucuronide, verbascoside, and its derivatives were reported in a decoction of lemon verbena leaf. Total phenolic content and anti-oxidant activity analyzed by DPPH assay were also reported in lemon verbena leaves. Lemon verbena leaf extract also show anti-oxidant activity by inhibiting generation of superoxide radical.
