Plant Story
Bogbean (Menyanthes trifoliata), also known as buckbean, is a perennial or wetland plant. Bogbean has been historically used as an emergency and supplementary food or medicine for people of the arctic area. Bogbean leaves have been used to treat several health conditions, including worms and skin disorders, or used traditionally as an astringent in folk medicine.
Bogbean leaves contain various phytochemicals such as phenolic compounds coumarins, flavonols, and iridoids. In a study comparing anti-oxidant and anti-microbial properties of four plants, bogbean was the highest in the total polyphenols and flavonoids as well as antioxidant activity analyzed by ABTS assay. In addition, the anti-microbial activity against Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus thuringiensis and Staphylococcus aureus was the highest for M. trifoliata.
