Plant Story
Pinus strobus, white pine, is an indigenous plant to North America. White pine was denominated as the “Tree of Peace” by the Native American Haudenosaunee and was used by Native Americans for medicinal purposes. In particular, the bark was used in decoctions, infusions, or poultices to treat several health conditions, such as pain, burns, and inflammation. White pine needles contain high levels of vitamin C and make an excellent herbal tea. The Chippewa also used pine resin to treat infections and even gangrenous wounds due to its anti-microbial property. White pine is the state tree of Maine and Michigan in the US and the provincial tree of Ontario, Canada.
White pine bark is a good source of phenolic compounds. A study reported anti-fungal activity of four Pinus trees against Trametes versicolor and P. strobus showed the greatest anti-fungal activity among four pine bark extracts tested. The anti-fungal activity of bark is thought to be the effects of terpenes and phenolic compounds.
