Plant Story
Populus tremuloides is a tree widely distributed in the boreal forest of North America and Eurasia. It is the state tree of Utah. It is known as golden aspen, quaking aspen, or white poplar. White poplar was used by Native Americans in traditional medicine to treat infected wounds and sprains.
It has been reported that golden aspen is a good source of phenolic compounds and also contains sterols, steryls, triterpenoids, and alkaloids, which have demonstrated anti-oxidant and anti-microbial activities. It was reported that golden aspen bark mainly consists of lignin with relatively lower amounts of other phenolic compounds, such as kaempferol, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, and phloridzin. The bark extract showed anti-microbial properties. Another study investigated the phenolic contents and anti-oxidant properties of golden aspen bark. In this study, crude hot water extract showed strong anti-oxidant activity, even when compared to a well-known antioxidant, BHT.
