Plant Story
Black cherry (Prunus serotina) is the most common among native cherries and fast-growing indigenous North American plants. Studies on black cherry mainly focused on fruit and leaves, but the bark has also been used in the US and British official pharmacy until the 1990s. Black cherry extract shows anti-oxidant activity and has been believed to potentially have anti-oxidant properties in the cosmetic and phytopharmaceutical industries. The bark has been well known as a cough suppressant but can also be used to reduce inflammation or to stop bleeding.
In a study investigating anti-oxidant activity of 35 plant species known to be helpful for diabetes, black cherry bark was ranked at 13th for anti-oxidant activity analyzed by DPPH, NBT/XO, and DCF/AAPH assays. The anti-oxidant activity was higher compared to plants that have been traditionally used for herbal medicine, such as dandelion, goldenrod, and sweet flag.
