Plant Story
Jurubeba (Solanum paniculatum) is perennial shrub native to tropical South America, where it has a variety of uses in culinary and traditional medicine. The plant grows up to 3 m high with smooth, heart-shaped leaves producing small, yellow fruits and white, lilac-like flowers. Variations of its roots, stems, fruits, and leaves have been used as tonics, carminatives, diuretics, anti-pyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory herbal medicines to alleviate symptoms of gastrointestinal and liver ailments. Previous publications have indicated that the leaves of this plant can be used to treat asthma, while also possessing anti-biotic, anti-oxidant, and modulatory effects on gastric acid secretion.
Although the clinical studies on jurubeba have been limited to the confines of Brazil, there are several publications that have investigated the chemical composition of the plant. Jurubeba leaf extract was analyzed by HPLC-ESIMS and discovered high quantities of phenolic compounds, such as hydroxycinnamates and quercetin derivatives. The hexane extract of jurubeba showed anti-inflammatory properties by inhibition of IL-4 release, NO production, and IFN-γrelease on LPS-stimulated murine peritoneal macrophages.
