Plant Story
Achillea millefolium, commonly known as yarrow, is a perennial herb growing in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It has been used in many countries as a traditional herbal medicine. In USA, it is known to be both native and introduced. Many tribes in North America have used yarrow to treat numerous symptoms such as cold, headache, boils, swelling, sprains, wound, and rheumatism. The infusion of its flowers was also used as a wash to treat eczema.
Yarrow was reported to contain many phytochemical constituents including sesquiterpene lactones (achillin, achillicin), flavonoids (luteolin, rutin, hyperoside), and phenolic compounds (chlorogenic acid, p-coumaric acid, sinapic acid). Many pharmacological properties of yarrow were reported including anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing activities. Yarrow extract shows the inhibition effect on LPS-induced inflammation in macrophages as well as radical scavenging activities. Hydroalcoholic extract of yarrow promotes the proliferation of human skin fibroblasts and the stimulation in a scratch wound assay.
