Plant Story
Saw palmetto (Serenoa serrulata, also known as S. repens) is a Native American plant growing in southeastern United States. It is a creeping, horizontal perennial plant usually growing as a small shrub. The fruits, saw palmetto berries, have been used for the treatment of inflammation. Saw palmetto berries are also known to be a general tonic that can stimulate the immune system and be helpful for the urinary tract and reproductive system or even against hair loss.
Saw palmetto berries have been studied for their biological activities. For instance, ethanol and water extracts inhibited COX-1 and COX-2, inflammatory enzymes. Another study reported anti-microbial activity of volatile oil extract of saw palmetto berry against several strains, such as Fusarium s. cucurbitae, F. oxysporum, and Bacillis subtilis. In addition, saw palmetto berry has demonstrated anti-oxidant activity and hair stimulant properties.
