Plant Story

Black walnut (Juglans nigra) is native to eastern North America. It is an economically important nut crop and often preferred in the food industry because of its unique flavor and aroma. Black walnut is the second highest produced walnut species in the United States with Missouri being the leader.

Black walnut contains juglone, which is known to be toxic to insects and microorganisms. It has been reported that juglone induces formation of semiquinone radicals and hydrogen peroxide that can cause oxidative stress and thus cytotoxicity. In addition to juglone, essential oil of black walnut leaves contain various volatile compounds and has shown anti-microbial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. (E)-caryophyllene, a major constituent of black walnut leaf essential oil, also showed inhibitory activity against Bacillus cereus, Staphyococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Aspergillus niger.
