Plant Story
Liatris is a genus of flowering plants in the Asteraceae family and native to North America. The Liatris genus is commonly called blazing star and some species are used as ornamental plants or in flower bouquets. Some species of Liatris has been used as a tonic or tincture for pains. Deer’s tongue, L. odoratissima, has also been used for its diuretic effects and applied locally for sore throats and gonorrhea.
The Liatris species has not been well studied for their bioactivity to date. However, a few studies have reported phytochemicals of L. spicata. It was reported that L. spicata contains flavonoids such as quercetin 3-glucoside, quercetin 3-rutinoside and quercetin 3-glucoside-7-rhamnoside. Other compounds including sesquiterpenes, sterols and phenolic acids were also reported in L. spicata. In addition, a butanol fraction of L. punctate extract showed anti-microbial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Candida albicans.
