Ascophyllum nodosum is an edible, large, brown alga commonly known as rockweed, Norwegian kelp, knotted kelp, or knotted wrack, which only grows in the northern Atlantic Ocean. In the Gulf of Maine, the northeastern coast of North America, there are several seaweeds commercially harvested with A. nodosum being the dominant species growing in this area and available year-round. This seaweed is managed sustainably and fully traceable. It contains various nutrients including dietary minerals, vitamins, and amino acids. It is also a good source of phlorotannins, which show anti-oxidant activities. Our study shows that Marinactive-ANB has anti-oxidant, anti-photoaging, skin brightening, as well as anti-wrinkle activities.
