Historia de la Planta

Papaver rhoeas, commonly known as common poppy, corn poppy, field poppy, or red poppy, is an annual herbaceous flowering plant growing in temperate and tropical regions. They have bright red, cup-shaped flowers with black centers. The flowers of P. rhoeas have been used as a painkiller for soothing mild aches and pains such as toothache and sore throat, a mild sedative, an expectorant for coughs, and as a digestive.

Phytochemical studies have isolated and identified several bioactive compounds from P. rhoeas flowers. They include protocatechuic acid, tyrosol, astragaline, coumarin, cyanidol, hyperoside, hypolaetin, isoquercitrin, kaempferol, luteolin, malvidin, rutin, vitexin and so on. The leaf extract and flower extract of P. rhoeas showed greater anti-oxidant activities than root extract or stem extract when tested with DPPH and TAC (total antioxidant capacity) assays. The flower extract also showed anti-microbial activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
